How well do you know the backstory of your Trust?

This week Marram’s remembering the 10 New Zealand Post Office workers who lost their lives on 15th October 1942 on Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands.

The Post and Telegraph workers were on coast watch duties in the Pacific when they were rounded up and beheaded by Japanese soldiers.

And that’s where the story of your Trust begins.

In 1944 their employers set up the Post Office Welfare Fund, to help workers recover from a devastating war by giving them access to affordable holidays.

Today that welfare fund is known as Marram Community Trust, but it’s still all about access to affordable holidays with healthcare benefits added.

Marram’s holiday homes look vastly different from the original converted Army Huts and the number of homes has grown over the years to more than 150 in prime holiday locations all over the country.

76 years later Marram is still honouring that promise of affordable holidays and healthcare for all its beneficiaries.

Please spare a thought this Saturday for the brave Post Office coastwatchers and the tragedy that started it all. It’s a great story – our story.
